District Description

Todd County School District, located in Todd County, Kentucky, is a blend of professional faculty members, support staff and students who care about student growth and achievement, and who are committed to excellence in education through the partnership of students, staff and the community.

Todd County has four schools, comprised of two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The current 2023-2024 enrollment of Todd County School district is 1742 students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade, with an additional 144 students enrolled in the Preschool Programs at North Todd Elementary and South Todd Elementary Schools. Todd County School District’s K-12 demographics are: 59.00% (1,035 students) Free/Reduced lunch; 15.0% (268 students) of the population receive special education services; and 6% (83 students) receiving ELL services; the ethnicity demographics of Todd County School District population including Kindergarten through Grade 12 are: 72.5% (1,366 students) Caucasian, 27.5% (518 students) minority students broken down into the following ethnicities: (8.9% (167 students) African American, 12.6% (238 students) Hispanic, 0.1% (1 student) Asian, 0.3% (6 students) American Indian, 0.1% (1 student) Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and 5.6% (105 students) identify as two or more races).  

There are approximately 120 teaching staff in Todd County School District, with the average student to teacher ratio being 15:1 across the district. Overall 92.3 % of the staff at Todd County Schools feel that their school is a good place to work.

Todd County was formed in 1820 between Christian and Logan counties in the Pennyrile region of Kentucky.  The county was named for Colonel John Todd, a frontiersman and uncle of Mary Todd Lincoln.  Todd County is the birthplace of acclaimed author and poet Robert Penn Warren, the nation’s first Poet Laureate. He won the first of three Pulitzer Prizes in 1947 for All the King’s Men, and is the only person in history to have won Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and poetry.  He was born in Guthrie in 1905.

With a total population of only 12,500, much of the county is preserved in a picturesque rural landscape. Cities within Todd County include Trenton, Guthrie, and Elkton (county seat).  Smaller communities within the county include Fairview, Clifty, Allensville, Kirkmansville, Sharon Grove, Allegre, and Daysville.

Todd County is one of the top agricultural producing counties in the state. Todd County is one of only a few of Kentucky’s 120 counties and one of only a few places in the world that produces three varieties of tobacco: burley tobacco, dark air-cured tobacco and dark fired tobacco. Contributing to that agricultural base is the oldest Amish settlement in Kentucky.
